Athletics: Negombo schools dominate 44th Sir John Tarbat Junior Championship

Two schools from Negombo, Maris Stella College and Ave Maria Convent won the overall boys and girls championships respectively at the 44th Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletic Meet which ended at Diyagama, Homagama on Thursday (8).

Negombo’s Calypso ‘guitars’ lose tuning

Trinidad and Tobago in the Afro-Caribbean region is often acknowledged as the motherland of Calypso music. Having reportedly originated somewhere in the early to mid-twentieth century, the style soon captured the hearts of varied audiences across the world, within the course of a decade, or two. Among the many who contributed to taking the style of music across boundaries both physical and political, Harold George ‘Harry’ Belafonte, Jr., also known as the ‘King of Calypso’ is said to have played a predominant role, by touring the world with his band and inspiring listeners in the 50s and 60s.
